In 2021, the Highlights Foundation, in partnership with The Brown Bookshelf, presented a year-long program called Amplify Black Stories, with a focus on supporting Black storytellers while confronting industry challenges and fostering change.
In 2024, a group of Amplify Black Stories fellows sought to continue the mission of The Brown Bookshelf. Our goals are:
- To highlight Black creators who paved the way for us
- To amplify the voices and work of Black kidlit creators from across the diaspora
- To push publishing to treat us and our work with equitable financial backing and support
- To work in service to/with the Black community
- To provide craft and industry resources, as well as support for Black creators of books for young readers
- To provide resources for educators, librarians, caregivers, and others who help put books in the hands of young readers
- To form a network that allows us to uplift the work of Black children’s book creators
- To foster community
- To continue a working relationship with The Brown Bookshelf members and The Highlights Foundation
